The breast star is shown here. The sash badge bears a strong similarity of design to the more familiar Pour le Mérite. The Black Eagle Order is not, however, any type of variant of the gallantry award.

Pour le Mérite

The Pour le Mérite was inaugaurated in 1667. It was reorganized in 1810 by King Friedrich Wilhelm III when it became known as the Order of Military Merit. It became Prussia's highest recognition to officers for courage on the battlefield and for superior military performance in time of war. The Prussian awards system valued the consistent performer more so than an individual who might perform a single act, however brave. It usually took repeated acts of bravery or continued good work over time to win this award which was presented on a black ribbon with silver stripes. In 1813 there was a charter extension to the Eisernes Kreuz statues that created the Pour le Merite with oak leaves which was to be given for exceptional merit. The ribbon for this honour was a black one with three silver stripes.

Eisernes Kreuz

The Iron Cross is one of the most easily recognized and prized of military awards in the world. It was inaugaurated on March 10th, 1813 by King Friedrich Wilhelm III. It's purpose was to reward outstanding acts of individual heroism, bravery or leadership during Prussia's struggle with Napolean's France. No other of the German states could award the cross but citizens of these states could be awarded this recognition by Prussia. The Iron Cross was created as a "step" award. That is, one had to be in possession of a lesser version before being awarded the next one. The steps in 1813 were: II Klasse, I Klasse and Gross Kreuz. There was a unique step incorporated at this time called the Grand Cross Star. It was awarded to only one person, Feldmarschal Blucher for his leadership at the battle of Belle-Alliance and hence is also known as the Blucher Stern.

However, it is not a "step" award as such. The lowest level was the 4th class. Awards above 3rd class were rarely accorded to ordinary military officers, these being reserved for nobility and royalty. The statute ribbon was white with orange stripes. Awards given for military service had a black ribbon with two white stripes and were accompanied by crossed swords if the recipient was involved in the fighting. In addition, if the order had been received on a previous occassion this was indicated on the ribbon.

Following the Protestant Reformation, large parts of the German langue of the Knights Hospitaller under the leadership of the Brandenburg bailiwick accepted Lutheran theology, but remained in subordination to the Roman Catholic order and its Grand Master . In 1812 the branch was turned into a merit Order by King Frederick William III of Prussia .
